Nissan explains that fog forms on the outside when the outside air is warmer and more humid than the cabin, especially when the A/C has cooled the glass, and that cold-weather fog forms on the inside. How to Stop Car From Fogging Up From the Inside
- Select defrost. This sends air to the windshield and, depending on the car, the side windows.
- Turn the A/C on. The A/C dehumidifies the air. On many cars it switches on by itself in defrost mode.
- Use fresh air, not recirculation. Recirculated cabin air keeps the moisture inside.
- Add heat if it is cold. Warm, dry air clears fog faster, but avoid setting the temperature at its extreme, as Honda advises.
- Raise the fan speed. Honda’s manual starts the standard defrost on high fan speed.
- Aim vents at the side windows if they fog, as Honda describes.
Honda’s rapid defrost uses recirculation and maximum heat for a short time, then returns to fresh air. Nissan’s defrost mode does not allow recirculation. Manuals differ, so follow the one for your car.

How to Stop Fog on the Outside of Car Windows
In warm, humid weather, such as a rainy day in Florida with the A/C on, the glass is cold and the outside air is humid, so fog forms outside. Nissan suggests this order:
- Run the wipers to clear the fog while temperatures even out.
- Set the A/C to its least cool setting, or turn it off, so the cabin and the outside air are closer in temperature and humidity.
- Turn off air recirculation so outside air comes in.
- Crack a window briefly if the first steps do not work. Nissan calls this the fastest way to equalize conditions.

How to Keep Windows From Fogging Up Again
- Do not stay in recirculation. Nissan and Honda both warn it can make windows fog.
- Keep moisture out of the cabin. Wet umbrellas, coats and floor mats release moisture into the air. Dry them or leave them in the trunk where you can.
- Check the cabin air filter. Nissan’s manual refers owners to the Service and Maintenance Guide for the in-cabin microfilter change interval, so look up the interval for your car. Our guide covers how often to replace a cabin air filter.
- Look for HVAC faults if fog keeps returning. Nissan lists a blocked fresh-air intake at the base of the windshield, clogged dashboard vents, low antifreeze, a failing blower motor and a failing heater core as possible causes.
- Wipe with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. Wiping with a hand leaves oils on the glass.
Anti-Fog Sprays and Home Remedies
We did not find independent test results for car anti-fog sprays, shaving cream or other home remedies, so we cannot say how well or how long they work. If you buy an anti-fog product made for glass, follow its label and test it on a small area first. A Today.com article suggests spreading shaving cream on the inside of the windshield, letting it sit for one to two minutes and buffing it off, but it is a tip, not a tested method. Clean glass and dry air are the fixes the manufacturers describe.
